THOUGHTS ON THESIS

Through this project, I wanted to focus on how we come to define a home. During COVID, I moved out of my childhood home and moved to my family’s frequent vacation spot, Portsmouth, RI. I frequently visited my childhood home before it was sold while my family was in our new home. However, this home I knew was dull and lost its happiness. Without my family, the physical space had lost all meaning and it no longer felt like a home.

It was then I realized,  “Home is people. Not a place. If you go back there after the people are gone, then all you can see is what is not there any more.” —Robin Hobb.

How does someone’s sense of identity relate to the context of a home, is it the physical space or the people that encompass it. I want to explore this sense of belonging, identity, and memory through photographs. How does what we know as a home evolve as we get older? Do we ever really have one home, or can homes be different places that encompass who we are as individuals?

How have the different places I’ve lived and experiences influenced my identity and my work as a designer. Home is the physical place, but the feeling of a home embodies the people living there. It’s the memories and experiences that take place within the physical space of a home that creates this overall feeling of what we correlate to a home.
